How is 7月 pronounced?

I recently saw a question: How do you pronounce 7月? 

最近（さいきん）、「『7月（がつ）』はどう発音（はつおん）しますか？」という質問（しつもん）を見（み）かけました。

　　　　

SHICHI-gatsu or NANA-gatsu? 

「しちがつ」？それとも「なながつ」？

　　　　

To get straight to the point, it is more common to pronounce SHICHI-gatsu than NANA-gatsu.

結論（けつろん）から言（い）うと、「なながつ」よりも「しちがつ」と発音（はつおん）する方（ほう）が一般的（いっぱんてき）です。

  

NANA-gatsu is not wrong, but it may sound unnatural to many Japanese people.

「なながつ」は間違（まちが）いではないですが、たぶん違和感（いわかん）を持（も）つ日本人（にほんじん）が多（おお）いと思（おも）います。

 

As for me, though, while I say  SHICHI-gatsu in everyday conversation, I usually say "NANA-gatsu" when talking on the phone.

ただ私（わたし）個人（こじん）に関（かん）して言（い）うと、普段（ふだん）の会話（かいわ）では「しちがつ」と言（い）いますが、電話（でんわ）で話（はな）すときは「なながつ」と言（い）うことが多（おお）いです。

 

This is because when I was in uni and working part-time as a call center operator, I was trained to pronounce NANA-gatsu, to prevent customers from misunderstanding it as ICHI-gatsu (1月) or SHI-gatsu (4月).  

これはなぜかというと、学生（がくせい）の頃（ころ）コールセンターのアルバイトをしていたときに、お客様（きゃくさま）が「いちがつ」や「しがつ」と聞（き）き間違（まちが）えないよう、「なながつ」と発音（はつおん）するように教（おそ）わったからです。

 

Similarly, I was also told to pronounce 4月 YON-gatsu instead of SHI-gatsu. 

同様（どうよう）に、「4月（がつ）」は「しがつ」ではなく「よんがつ」と発音（はつおん）するように言（い）われました。

 

And I still follow this kind of rule even after 10 years or more since I left.  

それで、アルバイトを辞（や）めてから10年（ねん）以上（いじょう）経（た）った今（いま）でもそのときのルール（？）を守（まも）っています。

 

For instance, when I’m asked my date of birth on the phone, I reply "NANA-gatsu jūichi-nichi desu." 

たとえば、電話（でんわ）で自分（じぶん）の誕生日（たんじょうび）を聞（き）かれたら、「なながつ じゅういちにち（7月（がつ）11日（にち））です」と答（こた）えます。

 

I would say YON-gatsu if I was born in April. 

4月（がつ）生（う）まれだったら、「よんがつ」と言（い）うと思（おも）います。

 

I know both NANA-gatsu and YON-gatsu may sound unnatural, but I don’t really care because the most important thing is to communicate the correct information.  

「なながつ」も「よんがつ」も不自然（ふしぜん）に聞（き）こえるかもですが、一番（いちばん）大切（たいせつ）なのは正（ただ）しい情報（じょうほう）を伝（つた）えることなので私（わたし）はあまり気（き）にしません。

  

Also, although I rarely make a reversion on the phone nowadays, if I need to make a restaurant reservation at 7 o'clock on the phone, I would pronounce it NANA-ji instead of SHICHI-ji to avoid being misunderstood as ICHI-ji (1時).  

それから、今（いま）はめったに電話（でんわ）で予約（よやく）することはないけれど、たとえば7時（じ）にレストランを予約（よやく）したい場合（ばあい）、「1時（じ）」と勘違（かんちが）いされないように、「しちじ」ではなく「ななじ」と言（い）います。

• Common ways to pronounce 4月（がつ） and 7月（がつ） are しがつ (SHI-gatsu) and しちがつ (SHICHI-gatsu). 
• To prevent misunderstanding, it is better to pronounce よんがつ (YON-gatsu)/なながつ (NANA-gatsu). 
• A common way to pronounce 7時（じ） is しちじ (SHICHI-ji), however, to clearly distinguish it from 1時（じ） (ICHI-ji), ななじ (NANA-ji) would be better.
