から vs. だから: Meaning, Examples, and Difference from ので/なので
As with ので and なので, から and だから are also conjunctions that can be used as "because," "since," and "so" and are generally used in the same ways as ので / なので. Later in this post, I will also write about the difference I feel between から/だから and ので/なので.
Basic pattern
Verb + から/ので
い-adjective + から/ので
Noun + だから/なので
な-adjective + だから/なので
Example with から/ので
1.
I have to go to bed early tonight because I have work tomorrow.
2.
Because she is busy, she can't answer the phone.
3. とても
とても
I went to bed early last night because I was very tired.
4.
It's cold today, so you should put on a jacket.
5.
I turned on the air conditioner because it was hot.
Example with だから/なので
1.
It’s cold because it’s winter now.
2.
My daughter can’t speak yet because she is only 1 year old.
3. このレストランはとても
このレストランはとても
This restaurant is always busy because they are very popular.
4.
You shouldn't need to worry since it's brand new.
5. とても
とても
I like this app because it's very handy.
So, what is the difference between から/だから and ので/なので ?
To me, as a native Japanese speaker, ので/なので sounds relatively politer. In fact, I tend to use ので/なので when writing texts/emails to my clients, my husband's family members, someone older than me, my daughter's teachers, etc. For example, if I were to tell my daughter's teachers that she had a fever and would be absent from nursery, I would say:
instead of "
Another example is when you were talking with a customer service person and couldn't hear what they said, you might want to say something like this:
すみません、
(Sorry, I couldn't hear what you said. Could you say that again?)
On the other hand, I use and hear から/だから a lot more often when I talk with my family and friends. For example, my husband sometimes texts me saying:
(I will go drinking with XXX, so I won't need dinner tonight🙇♂️)
And if I have movies/books/manga that I want to recommend to my family or friends, I would say:
これホントおもしろいからおすすめ!!
(It's really good! You should definitely watch/read it!)
Hope this helps! Please feel free to leave comments and questions below.
